Feed the Tree by Belly
I can't remember when I first heard this song. In my junior year of high school, I "discovered" it but I somehow knew majority of the lyrics. I've carried it through so many parts of my life and find it to be sewn in my soul.
Prior to Belly, Tanya Donelly was also in Throwing Muses who have a song called Honeychain. This is another cherished song from my adolescence.
(worth mentioning that Tanya Donelly was in The Breeders as well, crazy talent!)

This isn't technically music but recently I've been enjoying listening to dolphin sounds.
It's just so soothing and perfect for daydreaming that I'm at the beach. Highly recommend the album Dolphin Sounds by the artist, Dolphin Sounds

Lego Ring by Faye Webster ft. Lil Yachty

This was the first song I saved by Faye Webster. My friends always laugh a little when they hear it's my favorite of hers. There is just something about the use of auto-tune & the simplistic love that is being described. There is no way I could listen to this song and be in a bad mood. It has such a natural uplifting effect. "Always together like string beans" is one of my favorite lines. It is such a simple, but overwhelmingly sweet sentiment. It reminds me of the line "Two peas from the same pod, yes we are" in Summertime by The Sundays. I don't fully understand why this type of metaphor sticks with me so much but I think there is something special about being inseparable& feeling as if you were meant to be a pair.
I once saw Faye Webster on Brown's Island in Richmond. I hadn't really listened to her discography besides the chorus's of her hits but everyone I knew seemed to be going to the show. So I tagged along. I was holding out the whole time for Lego Ring and foolishly believed she would bring Lil Yachty out when it was finally performed. Even though e wasn't there for his verse, it was still such an awesome experience. Love this song.

Artist Highlight - The Be Good Tanyas

begood

Despite being from Canada, this folk trio always feels like Virginia to me. They perfectly capture the feeling of growing up as a woman in a rural, Southern town. I don't remember how I discovered them but I do remember 'Ship Out On the Sea' being the first track of theirs I listened to. Their lyrics seem so simplistic, in a way that makes them stick in your head more. As they sit there though, you begin to feel the depth of their meaning. Their view on life, love, and the inclusion of nature in both resonates with me in such a powerful way. Their album art (especially for Chinatown) is breathtaking as well.
This is truly an amazing group. A band with a similar vibe is Cowboy Junkies (another Avery favorite). If you enjoy them or were intrigued by this small review, I highly recommend The Be Good Tanyas.
Here are some personal favorites from their discography!

  • Ship Out On the Sea
  • In Spite of All the Damage
  • The Littlest Birds
  • Waiting Around to Die (Townes Van Zandt cover)
  • It's Not Happening
  • Draft Daughter's Blues aka Ootischenia

Warsh_Tippy and Zelda by Whatever, Dad

This is one of those songs that you don't realize is on your playlist then one day it blows you away.
It inspired me to go through my old voicemails which led to an unexpected wave of emotion. It was so sweet to hear old birthday wishes and voices of family/friends/people i was once close to.
I highly recommend giving this song a listen.
